Fresh off the $787 billion stimulus package needed after short-sighted, um, gambles on risky mortgages, Congress in general and Barney Frank in particular wants to repeal the online gambling ban. Yeah, there’s no way that this could go wrong. Not like we have a recent history of consumer-level speculation going bad, nor of government efforts to open up ways for Americans to spend money they don’t have on credit coming back to bite everyone.
So, outside of needing to bail friends out, what would this move mean for SEO? Well, back in the day, search engine spam and shady deals surrounded three areas: Pills, Porn and Casino. 2006’s laws pushing gambling offshore knocked out one of these – we can assume that 2009’s (attempted) repeal will resurrect it. Your blogs will require more monitoring, your search results will become muddier and you’ll be watching what you click even further. Link brokers will be happy, legit SEOers will be pissed and we’ll once again be on the defensive.
Chances of it happening? Slim. But you might want to start upgrading your Akismet filter right now anyway.
